Strasbourg too strong for Ligue 2 leaders

TEAM NEWS

Strasbourg’s influential midfielder Jeremy Grimm is an injury doubt. Otherwise the hosts are at full strength. There are likely to be changes following their 2-1 defeat at Valenciennes on Monday night. With a complete squad to pick from manager Thierry Laurey has excellent options.

Brest are waiting to hear whether 10-goal leading scorer Neal Maupay will be available after six weeks on the sidelines. They’ve sorely missed his ability in front of goal. In all other positions the visitors should be at full strength.

MATCH PREVIEW

This is a massive game near the top of the Ligue 2 table and should be one of the most entertaining games of the weekend.

Brest are top of the Ligue 2 standings on 49pts, with a 3pts lead over nearest rivals Lens and Reims. Strasbourg are fifth on 43pts so will be looking for 3pts to close the gap on the teams above them.

Both teams have plenty to prove after unexpected defeats last weekend. Brest were on the receiving end of the biggest shock last Friday when they lost 2-1 at home to Ajaccio. Brest dominated possession and had enough chances to collect all 3pts but didn’t use the ball as well as they normally do. The ongoing absence of 10-goal leading scorer Neal Maupay (see team news) is another reason why Brest were unable to turn pressure into goals.

Strasburg suffered a 2-1 defeat at Valenciennes on Monday night so are also looking to bounce back. And they stand a decent chance of doing so as their home form has been excellent in recent months (they’ve won six of their last seven fixtures at Stade de la Meinau) and they’ll be able to count on excellent support from one of the most passionate fanbases in the country.

Home advantage should be the crucial factor as Strasbourg really are comfortable playing in front of their own followers. As always, Brest will be competitive but the hosts look to have the edge this time.

HEAD TO HEAD

Strasbourg recent home record against Brest is W2-D1-L0.
